March on Washington’s youngest speaker

Here’s video from May 2013 of Asean Johnson speaking at a rally for Chicago schools.

Nine-year-old Chicago student Asean Johnson stepped up to the podium just after Rep. John Lewis at today’s event marking the fiftieth anniversary of the historic March on Washington.

Asean said fifty years ago, Congressman Lewis was the youngest speaker at the March on Washington and today he is!

Asean said in the neighborhood where he lives, fifty public schools have closed in Latino and African-American neighborhoods.

“Every child deserves a great education. Every school deserves equal funding” he said to thunderous applause.

As thousands cheered the young student, AFT President Randi Weingarten, on the stage next to him, came forward and shouted: “This is our future!”

Weingarten said today’s rally must not be a commemoration but a continuation of the fight for civil rights. Race and sexual orientation may be legal, she said, but in many cases they can still be “lethal.”
