New leaders in Albany for training, inspiration

School may be over for the summer but 125 new NYSUT leaders are back in the classroom this week.

The newly elected local presidents from across the state are at union headquarters in Albany for an in-depth primer on what NYSUT has to offer to help them excel in their leadership roles. They will hear from the statewide officers — Vice President Kathleen Donahue welcomed them this morning — and from representatives of each NYSUT department, including Accounting; Communications; Field and Legal Services; Legislation; Member Benefits; Research and Educational Services; and more.

Also on the agenda for the nearly week-long conference are sessions on governance, member engagement, community engagement and fiduciary responsibility. The leaders — from K-12, higher ed and SRP locals — will tour the state Capitol and meet with NYSUT-endorsed vendors.

Later in the week, the new local presidents will travel to the NYSUT Regional Offices with which they will work closely throughout the year. There, they will meet with the labor relations specialist assigned to their local as well as other staff in the region.
