Fight Back Friday: Listen to your Mother (Jones)

In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a video to help you gear up for the rally June 8 in Albany.

I just wanted to provide a bit more background on Mary Harris “Mother” Jones quote of  “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.” Jones was speaking to group of newly-organized miners in West Virginia meeting in a church. The full quote, according to her autobiography, as she urged the members to leave the church where they were meeting and to gather instead in the fields was “Your organization is not a praying institution. It’s a fighting institution. It’s an educational institution right along industrial lines. Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living!”

Jones is also known for organizing the Children’s Crusade, a 1903 march from Philadelphia to Oyster Bay, N.Y. protesting child labor in the mills and in the mines.

When Sheryl Delano holds up the sign that says “Mother Jones would be there,” you can bet she would. Will you?
