Sharing what you do

NYSUT’s award-winning “It’s What We Do” website, a forum for NYSUT members and others to share with the public the extraordinary work they do — on their jobs and in their communities — is about to get a public relations shot in the arm.

Beginning this week, weekly and monthly newspapers across the state began carrying ads promoting “It’s What We Do,” and urging readers to visit the site and, perhaps, share their own experiences how our members have affected their lives. The ad features Bronx music teacher Caroline Duggan, who started and runs a highly successful afterschool Irish dance program that has performed at the White House and for the NYSUT Representative Assembly. Duggan’s story was one of the first presented on the website.

Earlier this year, “It’s What We Do” was recognized by the National Education Association PR Council of the States as one of the best “public image” campaigns in the nation.

It is about time the state hears about the positive influences teachers provide their students inside and outside the classroom. We teach because we care with the goal to empower our students.
