Urgent: Tell Albany to support tax fairness and education funding

There’s no time to waste.

CALL and FAX your state representatives today.

We want lawmakers to approve a progressive income tax structure that will provide enough revenue to close the state’s deficit and restore devastating cuts to public education. Tell lawmakers any deal they make this week must combine tax fairness with restoring funding to public education, higher education and health care.

Call toll-free (877) 255-9417 and ask to be connected to the Assembly and Senate. Again, here’s the link to easily fax your lawmaker.

And if you have more time, here’s some press conferences across the state you could attend. Today events are in Syracuse, Albany, Plattsburgh, Riverhead and White Plains.

And if you want any details about what is NOT fair. Here’s info from Robert Reich, former U.S. Labor Secretary:

New data from the Commerce Department shows employee pay is now down to the smallest share of the economy since the government began collecting wage and salary data in 1929. Meanwhile, corporate profits now constitute the largest share of the economy since 1929. 1929, by the way, was the year of the Great Crash that ushered in the Great Depression.

As an educator and a taxpayer with children in the public education system, I see both sides of the coin. Cuts in education programs are not the way to go about restoring fiscal integrity. Let’s focus on other ways to cut taxes after all the children are the future. What could be a better investment than seeing that education programs remain in place to help students develop into productive and contributing members of society.
