NYSUT members honor fallen workers

Memorial Day is about fallen soldiers. The labor movement does much to honor military workers. Perhaps the most is advocating that they receive a decent wage.

At last month’s Workers Memorial Day observance at NYSUT, we paid special tribute to two soldiers from the Capital Region, David T. Miller of Wilton and Benjamin D. Osborn of Queensbury, who died in Afghanistan over the past year.

Service tends to run in families and it seems most public workers I meet and know have a long tradition of members serving in the armed forces or a variety of reserves. Memorial Day is about remembering all the fallen and thanking them for their service.

The National Labor College established a workers memorial recently. Participants of the 2010 Leadership Institute purchased a brick. We recently received a photo of what it looks like. (It hasn’t been installed yet of course.)

May you share good memories of your fallen soldiers today.
