Great opportunity for psychologists

It seems that almost every mental health topic making headlines today  is going to be given its due during the fabulous lineup for psychologists at a coming conference. Next Tuesday is the last day to register online for the NYSPA annual convention, being held in New York City June 3-5.

“We have a lot of school-related topics,” said Tracy Russell, executive director of New York State Psychological Association.

Check out the line-up on Friday: teen anger management education; reconceptualizing gender; psychological support for childhood stress; cognitive behavior intervention for aggressive youth; and parents and pills. Dr. Jonathan Shedler is the keynote speaker.

School psychologists should also note the relevance of workshops on the schedule for Saturday. It includes cyberbullying: electronic aggression among today’s youth; restoring psychotherapy as a first-line intervention; and technology in and out of the classroom: advantages and disadvantages. Keynote speaker is Dr. Nick Cummings.

Sunday’s sessions tackle many issues that mental health professionals deal with in their jobs: problematic Internet use –addiction or not; American Red Cross training for mental health response and disaster; and successful transitions in divorce–assisting patients and assessing families.
