NYC’s own PS 22 Chorus wows ‘em at the Oscars

Singing at the White House Christmas tree lighting? Check.

Having more than a million views of your YouTube videos? Check.

Closing the Academy Award ceremony Sunday night with a beautiful version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”? Check.

Those three accomplishments are just part of the resume of union member and music teacher Gregg Breinberg from Staten Island’s PS 22 – and the incredibly talented PS 22 chorus he assembles each year from the fifth graders at his Staten Island public elementary school.

The PS 22 Chorus is a national sensation, bringing another incredible experience to the lives of children taught every day by members of the United Federation of Teachers, NYSUT’s New York City affiliate; Breinberg and his students were featured in NYSUT’s official publication last year.

Their emotional performance Sunday night – before a worldwide audience and in a theater packed with Hollywood stars – was called “heartwarming” by the New York Daily News. Today they are scheduled to perform on Oprah Winfrey’s Oscar special.

“It was everything we hoped and then some,” Breinberg told the Daily News. “The audience really gave the kids the respect they deserve. Everyone came up afterward and said we stole the show.”
