NYSUT’s Susan Lafond knows a thing or two about professional development for educators. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and works with statewide professional development training through the union’s Education & Learning Trust. Lafond also serves on AFT’s ELL Educator Cadre and is an expert practitioner and adviser to Colorin Colorado.
Recently, Lafond added to her resume the title “contributor” to The Standard, the official blog of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Her piece, “Teachers are Members of Learning Communities,” talks about collaborations and partnerships among educators.
Lafond urges all educators — not just NBCT members — to use The Standard as a professional development tool: “Are you looking for more stories from educators? The National Board blog, The Standard, is where you can read posts from accomplished teachers on a variety of topics from policy to practice. You’ll want to subscribe if you haven’t already done so!”
There are 1,790 New York State teachers who have achieved national certification; 21 reached that “gold standard” last year.
