Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene was killed Aug. 5 in Afghanistan. Greene, the highest ranking U.S. officer in Afghanistan, grew up in Guilderland and was the son of long-time NYSUT retiree leader and activist Harold Greene Sr. Many NYSUT insiders and former retiree leaders will recall that Harold Greene Sr. was the long-time president of his local – the Albany Public School Teachers Association.
After retirement, Harold Sr. and his wife, Eva, also a teacher and NYSUT member, remained very active in their union: Harold was a founder and served as president of his retiree chapter. He then became a long-time leader and officer of Retiree Council 10. The Greenes served on the Board of New York State Wide Senior Action Council. Eva died last year. Harold Sr. is still an active board member of New York State Wide Senior Action Council.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the Greene family along with our deep gratitude for the sacrifice made by their great son.
