New York’s experience with Common Core state assessments should serve as a “warning siren” for states and districts across the country rushing to make the Common Core about tests and not about ensuring that the necessary shifts in instruction have occurred.
That’s what American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten told members of the Rockville Centre Teachers’ Association at a recent opening day meeting with teachers, administrators and support staff. (See photos.)
RVCTA President Viri Pettersen, who wrote a colorful blog post about Weingarten’s call-to-action, presented Weingarten with an unusual gift to help her sound the alarm: A cowbell.
The cowbell was decorated with a most appropriate quote from Martin Luther King, Jr: “The time is always right to do what is right.”
“It ended up being the perfect quote for everything she said to us about the union stepping up to do the right thing,” Pettersen said. “That’s what solution-driven unionism is all about.”
