Health and safety advocate Greenbaum is PSC’s top ‘watchdog’

joan greenbaumNYSUT members stood up and cheered to sing the praises of Joan Greenbaum, a health and safety activist from the Professional Staff Congress, who was given the Unsung Heroes Award Friday night at NYSUT’s Health and Safety Leadership Conference.

The retired CUNY computer science professor helped create a health and safety committee on each campus to make safer, cleaner workplaces at the city university. Although she wore a deep red Norwegian sweater in accepting her award at this weekend’s conference in Saratoga Springs, Joan is best known for showing up at labor events wearing a long-tailed denim shirt with the logo “PSC Watchdogs.” That’s the name given to the network of health and safety defenders she helped establish at CUNY .

Joan said she advocates for people to get involved in health and safety for “a love of working conditions and a love of ourselves.”
