New York students excel (again)

Congratulations to the 40 students, and especially the seven New Yorkers, who have been named finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search.

Here’s a link to all 40 students and their schools.

We’ve teased out those from New York. If the district is obvious from the name of the school, we left that out. Any media coverage on the students, their programs or their teachers are linked to the name. The students, and the topics they submitted, are:

  • Daniel McQuaid (Ossining High School)
Identification of post-translational regulation sites on the KLF6 tumor suppressor as novel targets for cancer therapies
  • Peng, Jiayi (Horace Greeley High School) in Chappaqua
A Cellular Automaton Model for Critical Dynamics in Neuronal Networks
  • Samantha Scibelli (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School)
Census of Blue Stars in the Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
  • Jamie Solimano (Stuyvesant High School) in Manhattan
Super-resolution STED Microscopy Provides Insight Into the Dynamics of Intraflagellar Transport and Reveals Novel Distribution of Adenylate Cyclase III in Primary Cilia
  • Mayuri Sridhar (Kings Park High School)
Computational Analysis of the DNA-Binding Mechanism of the p53 Tumor Suppressor and its Inactivation through the R249S Mutation
  • Chris Traver, (Croton-Harmon High School) in Croton-on-Hudson
Investigating Noise Pollution Using Smartphones and Citizen Scientists
  • Michael Zhang (Smithtown High School East) in St. James
Role-Inducted Perspective Visual Behavior during Scene Free-Viewing

Congratulations to the districts that provide such challenging programs for students. Competition for The Intel Science Talent Search is steep: Of more than 1,700 high school seniors who entered projects in 2009, 300 were announced as semifinalists in January. Of those, 40 were chosen as finalists and invited to Washington, D.C., to compete for the top 10 awards. Here’s a link to a 2009 article about the efforts of two Long Island students who made the top 10.
