Feel good Friday

It’s a fantastic Friday because we have two bits of good news to share.
Click on this link to see a wonderful slideshow of schoolchildren getting books from a group of NYSUT retirees.

This group of Retiree Council 15/16 members has  been working for four years distributing books and supplies to needy schools. They determine need based on free lunches. The NYSUT retiree raise funds from individual donations and also from certain activities. Big “congrats” to those involved, especially Suzanne Carlock, Alma Cormican and Doris Blank.

Second, here’s a great idea from the North Syracuse Early Education Program, which invites people to be a guest readers. Here’s the poem created by this group:

Join us for a little seasonal cheer,
Main Street’s Cookies with Santa
comes but once a year.
Reading to the kids is a meaningful way,
to enjoy this special holiday.
See the delight in the simple joys,
Of reading to preschool girls and boys.

It’s a great idea to increase community involvement in schools. Of course, we want folks to see what goes on in schools because then perhaps they’ll be more likely to support an investment in public education.

Speaking of which, have you made your plans to rally at the state Capitol on Dec. 5? Check this link for the latest bus routes.  If you can’t make it, you could still send along a scroll.
