Helping hands, by the busload

Schoharie TA members know how to return a favor. They, along with other NYSUT members from as far away as Glens Falls, boarded a bus early Saturday bound for Staten Island to help colleagues there clean up their homes after Superstorm Sandy wiped out their neighborhoods. It was a little more than a year ago that UFT members sent supplies and boarded a bus bound for Schoharie when that community was severely flooded after Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. In the meantime, NYSUT members and staff have been busily collecting food, clothing and cleaning supplies to deliver to Long Island and New York City. Trucks from NYSUT headquarters traveled to Massapequa last Thursday. SRP leaders attending a conference over the weekend in Cooperstown donated supplies that were delivered to Long Beach, and yet another truck dropped supplies today in Linderhurst.

The recovery is proceeding and power is slowly being restored, but the disaster is massive. More collections and deliveries organized by NYSUT will be made in the coming days.

Please contact your local leader about how you, your colleagues and your community can help. And, don’t forget NYSUT’s Disaster Relief Fund. Donations are urgently needed so we can assist members who lost their homes or who are trying to repair damage. For information about how to donate, visit
