Report: Lawmakers could be back

UPDATE: Capital Tonight: Assembly Told To Prepare For Three-Day Session

The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders are discussing the possibility of a special session this month to “approve an economic package that may include new taxes on the wealthy.”

Lawmakers are currently scheduled to return to Albany in January. But an unnamed state senator told the newspaper, “There’s a good possibility we go back in the next two weeks.”

Cuomo recently said he’s looking to reform the state’s personal income tax. Democrats, who control the Assembly, say they want additional revenues to help close an estimated budget deficit for 2012-13 of more than $3 billion. The Journal reported that Republicans, who control the Senate, have privately indicated they might be able to stomach new taxes on wealthier New Yorkers if they are packaged with middle-class tax breaks.
