Send us your summer school stories

Summer school is not in session for a number of districts across the state. This is perhaps the first impact of the $1.3 billion budget cut on students.

As an education reporter, I’ve covered many a summer school session. I’ve seen amazing teachers with lessons that work to give students who are at risk of failing a grade to get back on track and move on with their friends. I’ve seen enrichment programs that allow teachers and students to build rockets, write musicals, even build computers.

At each program, whether it was in New York City or the north country, so many kids told me summer school gives them something to do. Yes, many admit, if they weren’t in school, they know they’d be getting into trouble.

Here’s a link to one blog post about the value of summer school.

Is your district still offering summer school? What is its value?

Was summer school cut in your area? What does this mean for your community? Send us your thoughts, or please ask parents and students for theirs. Comment or email to bsandber@nysutmail.org
