Before the snow came (again!) on Sunday, more than 100 first-timers were among those who ventured to Saratoga on Friday and Saturday for the NYSUT Health and Safety conference to learn, learn, learn.
Teachers, custodians, teaching assistants and school nurses, both rookies and veterans, came to learn how to form a union health and safety committee; how to protect staff and students during construction; how to prevent bullying; and how to reduce stress in these difficult and challenging times of working in public education.
School nurses learned how they can enhance their health and safety role.
Why did all these NYSUT members give up a weekend to spend it taking notes in conference rooms?
As presenter Margaret Sergent of the Rochester Teachers Association said, “I was tired of being powerless and without a voice.”
Photos from the conference will be online soon!
