VIDEO: Musical tribute to laid-off teacher in Yonkers

Marc Pekowsky of the Yonkers Federation of Teacher posted this video to the NYSUT United Facebook page. I’ll let him explain in his own words.

If you would like to see something truly heartwarming and a prime example of why we teach, check out this Youtube video to see a little girl’s wonderful tribute to her former teacher [VIDEO]. And the irony is that this amazingly talented kid will no longer receive musical guidance or instruction as all performing arts have been cut and her teacher laid off in the Yonkers Public Schools.

When we offered our thanks for alerting us to the video, Marc had this to say:

We need more than thanks. We need help to bring back our 90 laid-off teachers and restore programs like music, art, technology, health, home & careers, etc. Our kids are being deprived of a fully-funded well -rounded education. This can’t go on!

Take Marc’s advice and take action. Send a message to your representatives in Albany. Tell them to act to restore education jobs and finish work on the state budget.

What a wonderful answer to all the negativity out there. Read Elections Matter in the October/November issue of the American Teacher. It profiles a music teacher who was laid off, has been rehired and now recognizes the importance of being politically active.
